Through this poster the UJCF expressed its sympathy with the overthrown Communists in Chile. The quotation from the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda had a particular significance as he was ambassador to France 1970-1972. The 'suffering' in this context refers to the detention and torture of political prisoners. The image shows France weeping for Chile. The tears of Marianne (an allegorical symbol of French Liberty) form the geographical shape of Chile.
