Gallery label | Rousseau inherited a shop selling ceramics and glass and a workshop at 43 rue Coquillière, in Paris. He was not a designer himself but was particularly influenced by Japanese art when he began to commission glass designs around 1867. Most of his glass was executed by Appert Frères at Clichy. The designers are rarely identifiable. The informal bag-like shape of this vase and the idea of fish swimming under the surface on which float water-weeds are all Japanese in inspiration. It was shown in the international exhibition, Paris, 1878 |
