Colour offset lithograph from wood engraving
E.1665-1929
Given by Harold Curwen
Paul Nash produced some of the most successful pattern papers for
Curwen: his crocus design sold nearly 20,000 sheets between 1925-
37. He tended to use large blocks, some as large as 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches,
while other artists might produce blocks 1 inch square. The block
for this paper was 1 1/2 x 3 1/8 inches. In 1927 he wrote 'Wood seems
to yield to the evolution of an abstract design or a decorative
arabeque as stone excites the sculptor to the creation of pure form.
For it is the glyptic character of engraving on wood which is its
peculiar charm...'. |
Credit line | Given by Mr Harold Curwen |
Production | The artist produced a small design, an inch or two square, and the Curwen Press turned this into a patterned paper. |
