Designs for altars
Italian, about 1630-40
Pencil, pen and in and wash, with
lining in gold paint

Mola, an architect and painter, designed the
centre and left hand altars. The one on the
right is by an anonymous hand. The large
space at the centre of each design was
intended to hold a painting of a Biblical
subject. The arrangement of the three
drawings on one sheet, and the gold-
painted lines, is typical of drawings from
the Talman collection. This was the largest
architectural resource of its day and was
put together by the architect William
Talman (1650-1719) and his son John
(1677-1726).
