Ward Jackson, Peter, Italian Drawings. Volume One: 14th - 16th century, London, 1979, cat. 210, pp. 99-101, illus. The following is the full text of the entry: ? NICOLETTO (ROSEX) DA MODENA (worked c. 1500 – 12) 210 Designs (2 on 2 sheets laid down on one mount) for pilaster ornament composed of a classical candelabrum Pen and ink 3 5/8 x 1 3/8 (92 x 35) and 4 ¾ x 1 (120 x 25) 8085.1 PROVENANCE John Talman (as shown by the ornamental gold border; see Lugt 2462); Richard Cosway (Lugt 629); bought 1875 The drawings are mounted one above the other in such a way as to make them appear on design; but in fact there are two separate drawings. They were formerly attributed to Giulio Romano, but are earlier in date. The character of the ornament, the style of the drawing and the hatching of the background invite comparison with the six drawings ascribed to Nicoletto da Modena (nos. 204-09).
