Giron

Poster
ca. 1972 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

On 17 April 1961, roughly 1,300 Cuban exiles led an invasion of Giron Beach, Cuba with the hope of overthrowing Fidel Castro's pro-Communist regime. The invasion, known as the Bay of Pigs, was sponsored by the United States government (who initially denied any involvement). Within three days, the invading forces were forced to surrender. This failed invasion was seen as a major Cuban triumph over President Kennedy's administration. The event escalated the Communist-Capitalist tensions that led to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
