Mexican students took the opportunity to protest against the Mexican government prior to the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City. The upcoming games provided them with an international platform from which to express their grievances. Among the issues they raised were eliminating poverty, establishing university autonomy and freeing political prisoners.
