Carpet
mid 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Carpet of wool and cotton woven like chiné velvet, and the warp of wool being printed with the pattern before being woven with a cotton ground warp and weft.
The central medallion contains a wreath of small, pink flowers which surrounds larger flowers in pinks, blues and mauves on an oatmeal ground. These are enclosed in a double 'gilt frame', an oval in an indented rectangle, linked on four sides, with a vermilion acanthus scroll on a maroon ground in the spaces between. From the outer 'frame' swags of blue flowers are looped against a black ground, while bunches of pink and white flowers fill the corners. The outer edging is another 'gilt frame' with beading.
