Fritz Blumenthal (1913-2002) was born in Mainz, Germany, before moving to America. His chosen style was abstract impressionism, and his chosen medium the monoprint (a print in which no two prints are identical). In 'Street Fighting', the spontaneous effects of the monoprint process give the composition an emotional charge: the block-like forms of the firing squad are silhouetted against the yellow town square and the brown verticals of trees beyond, a splash of red pigment explodes like gunfire to the left.
