Aeneas Killing Stags

Tapestry
ca. 1540-1570 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Tapestry woven in wool and silk showing Aeneas with 'antique' armour, a cloak and soft headgear like a Phrygian cap, standing on the left. He has just shot an arrow into the neck of a stag, and a dead stag is lying on the ground behind it. At the right, among some trees, Achates with a spear dispatches another stag. In the wooded distance Trojans carry more dead stags towards a table set up on the shore. Their ships are moored at the left.

The border consists of a wide palm-tree stem wound round with clusters of fruit and flowers, and seventeen small creatures, mostly birds.
Warp count 16-17 to inch.
