Object history | An original label says the model is of soapstone and that it was made from drawings taken in the survey of Sanchi stupa carried out in 1870, under the direction of Lieutenant Henry Hardy Cole. Cole was the son of Sir Henry Cole, first Director of the South Kensington Museum (renamed Victoria and Albert Museum in 1899). He also organised the making of a plaster cast of the Stupa's eastern gateway, which was displayed in the Museum's architecture court, and in 1870-71 of other buildings in Delhi and Fatehpur Sikri. |
