Gallery label | Pitcairn-Knowles enjoyed ‘sports photography’ (although this term had not yet been coined). Nevertheless, he often ignored the actual sport in favour of peripheral activities. The bottom image highlights an intense moment in the ladylike sport of rabbit racing. The top image is one of a group of photographs entitled ‘How the Belgian bets or where the bookmakers and the Paris Mutuel work side by side and prosper’, in which the spectators are the focus rather than the racing dogs.
