Coat for Lucy Ashton worn by Nina de Silva. Cream crepe coat ?with ribbon net embroidered collar, with long sleeves ending in deep cuffs of grey silk (much deteriorated). Up the sleeves above the cuffs and up the skirt is embroidered a floral pattern in coloured bullion thread. Down the fronts are appliqued embroidered 'froggings'. The coat fastens and is trimmed with large embroidered buttons. The coat is slit up either side, revealing remains of grey silk lining/facing. Above the cuffs are bands of embroidery as around the hem. Around lower edge is cream silk fringe.

Object history | This costume was worn by Nina de Silva as Lucy Ashton in the play 'The Last Heir', Stephen Phillips adaption of Sir Walter Scott's The Bride of Lammermoor. The play was produced on 5th October 1908 at the Adelphi Theatre, London by the Martin Harvey Company. The scenery was designed by W. Telbin and George J Dobson, the wigs were by Clarkson and Gustave, and the dances were arranged by Leslie McCormick. Costumes for the production were supplied by L & H Nathan, Miss Dyball, Miss Evans (Martin Harvey), C Alias (Miss de Silva and Miss Maud Hoffmann), and Miss Gloag. |
