Costume for an unidentified character. Clear blue silk robe embroidered with chrysanthemum and insect motifs, edged at the neck, left front, bottom, side vents and part of the right front with a broad embroidered band of black satin embroidered with stylised flowers. The robe fastens across the right side with long loop buttonholes on to gilt chased buttons on long loops. Attached is a clear pink silk lining and a loose lining of pale blue green silk.

Object history | This costume was worn in the European premiere of S.I. Hsiung's play Lady Precious Stream performed at the Little Theatre, London, 17 December 1934 by the People's National Theatre. The production was directed by Nancy Price and S.I. Hsiung, and the costumes were by L. & H. Nathan, W. Clarkson, H.M. Rayne and loaned from Professor Eileen Power. This costume was given to the British Theatre Museum Association by Nancy Price's daughter, Elizabeth Maude, along with other items relating to Nancy Price. |
