These hairpieces were worn by the actress Ethel Irving as the title character in the comedy Lady Frederick at the Royal Court Theatre in 1907. In one scene in the third act, Lady Frederick appears dischevelled, with undone hair and no make-up on. She has her hair done by her maid while she makes up her face before the audience. These hairpieces may have been used by Ethel Irving during this scene in the play. Lady Frederick had been written in 1903 but had previously been refused by many theatre managers due to this scene.
