This cut-out historiated initial 'C' (a initial containing a recognizable scene or figure) may have come from a large liturgical book, possibly made in Lombardy in the fifteenth century. It may have been used during the celebration of the Mass and the figure might be St. Cecilia, often depicted holding a musical instrument. The cutting may correspond to her feast day (22 November). It is decorated with foliate ornamention and burnished gold leaf (gold paint that has been polished to shine).

Brief description
Initial C from a liturgical book, with possibly St. Cecilia and four female musicians; Lombardy, late 15th century. A duplicate number MS.1005 was assigned to this object in error and was subsequently cancelled.
Physical description
Cut-out historiated initial 'C' with five female figures, possibly St. Cecilia. Possibly made in Lombardy in the fifteenth century. Probably double-sided (now pasted down onto card). Colour pigments and burnished gold leaf.

Recto: one dark pink historiated initial with figures and green foliate decorations.

Verso: cutting now pasted onto card thus rendering the reverse side inaccessible.
