Grow Your Own Food

Poster
1942 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Abram Games championed the use of modern war poster designs. He took an unpatronising view of his audience, arguing that people were fully capable of working out a modern design whatever their experience of art. This surrealist image works by inviting the viewer to take the place laid at the table, and encouraging the link between eating and cultivation. The government's 'Dig for Victory' campaign aimed at raising Britain's self-sufficiency at a time when many merchant ships were being sunk.
