This and the companion volume (9175) comprise a florilegium (flower book) illustrating the plants collected by Count Johann of Nassau-Idstein for the gardens at his castle in Idstein (Germany) in the 1650s. The album also includes views of the garden, and some of the buildings within it.The paintings (subsequently bound into 2 volumes) were made Johann Walter who visited the gardens at least eight times between 1651 and 1672. The plants included established garden favourites such as pinks and columbines, as well as more exotic species, and other plants, such as the Marvel of Peru, newly introduced to Europe from the Americas.
