This is one of 78 designs given to the V&A by the architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw and his practice Grimshaw. Grimshaw is at the very top of the British architectural profession, enjoying an international reputation for buildings which are uncompromisingly modern, technologically innovative and rigorously detailed. This is all underpinned by Grimshaw's belief that beauty and structural honesty go hand in hand. This is a design for Sainsbury's supermarket at Camden Town, completed in 1988. At the time, most supermarkets were built in a mock-vernacular style, with brick walls, tiled roofs and the ubiquitous clock-tower. The exposed steel structure of this Sainsbury's was quite a contrast and the building attracted architectural students as well as shoppers. The V&A already holds a model of the same project (E.477-1998).
