Joseph Clark sent the oil painting entitled 'A Sick Child' to the Royal Academy in 1857. It was very well received by the Victorian public, and established him as a popular painter of childhood subjects. This precise etching was made by the artist himself, after the painting. Its accuracy, close observation and the pathos of the subject, prevent it from being merely sentimental.
