Object history
Formerly Bandinel Collection.
Production
Acquired as Doccia porcelain, 18th or 19th century; identified as earthenware and attributed to Italy, late 18th or early 19th century; a similar model exists in Niderviller tin-glazed earthenware (C.270-1921) and this led to the attribution of this piece to Eastern France, perhaps Lunéville; however, both probably derived from examples in Meissen porcelain, which was widely copied. For a related piece with Septfontaines (Luxembourg) marks see see Musée de Sevres, Villeroy & Boch, exh. cat. 1985, cat. 30, where this example is dated to the late 18th century. The man wears trousers rather than breeches, which may point to an early 19th century date. Examined by Christian Maire November 2004, who suggested it was made at Pont-aux-Choux.
