How to order images

There are two sizes of images available through 'Search the Collections', low resolution digital files (72 ppi, 768 pixels on longest side), and high resolution files (300 ppi, 2500 pixels on longest side) which are suitable for publication up to A5 size (148mm x 210mm, 5.8 x 8.3 inches).

Low Resolution images

To copy an image, right lick the image and select 'Save picture As/Copy Image' from the pop-up menu.

High Resolution images

A growing number of images are available at high resolution, where there are no copyright restrictions or the rights-holder has given permission.

You can select images you wish to order in high resolution and download them to your computer by clicking the button 'Order this image' when you view the image. Your selected images may be viewed in an 'order lightbox' which shows your selection as thumbnail images. You can also think of this a little like adding items to a shopping basket on a commercial site. Images can be removed from your order at any point before completing the order.

You may download 30 high resolution images in any session. This limit is in place to discourage misuse of the service and to avoid excessive demand on our servers. This limit will be reviewed from time to time.
